It May Be "Imperfect", but It's a Perfect Cold-Weather Read

I admit it.  I'm a sucker for a good series.  Not the kind that has a cliffhanger at the end of every book.  The kind that introduces us to a group of people that we get to know and love over several stories.

So when I started reading "Imperfectly Perfect" by A.E. Woodward, I knew I was gonna be hooked. Sure enough, three days later, I had read them all and was depressed because...well, there weren't any more.

The series, aptly titled "A Series of Imperfections" follows a group of roommates...three guys and one girl nearing the age of 30 as they navigate their way through life and love.  But here's where it gets interesting...none of the situations are even remotely similar.  How so?

In "Imperfectly Perfect", Emma and Shane are both trying to find love in all the wrong places and may be missing what's right in front of them.

In "Imperfectly Real ", Tyler falls for a married woman.  WHAT?!?  Yeah.  I didn't see that coming either.  But relax, you triangle haters.  Things are not always what they seem.

In "Imperfectly Bad", Rob is still pining for a lost love that turns back up and turns his world upside down, whether he likes it or not.

Each book made me cry at some point (damn pregnancy hormones), but mostly because they aren't your cookie cutter romance novels.  They look at the harder issues that come with relationships.  The ugly side, if you will.  And my heart broke when theirs did.  Which was quite a few times.  You know.  Like real life.

A.E. and I have discussed this series and how much I enjoyed it.  But she knows where my critique comes in.

The editing.

However, I will give her mad props for the fact that "Imperfectly Perfect" was her debut novel.  She used ZERO beta readers.  And it was her editor's first edit.  Obviously they have both come a long way since then.

So be prepared to overlook some editing mistakes and the word "whilst" (in A.E.'s words, "That was a rookie mistake.  Someone convinced me to use it.").  But I promise it will be worth it in the end to meet these characters.  Personally, I wish they were real so I could infiltrate their group and be their new friend.

While the editing was imperfect, the stories made up for it to bring in

You Can "Trust" Brenda Rothert's Opinion

One of my favorite authors has become a friend of mine.  She impresses me so much because she writes like mad.  I don't know many authors who can put out as many books as she does every year.  And the quality never seems to suffer.  So when she started talking about the latest book she had read, I said, "Why don't you write a review on it?"  To my surprise, she gave me a resounding "YES!"  So take it from Brenda Rothert...if she's taking time out of her super crazy schedule to review a book, you know it's good:

"For me, a mark of a good writer is one who can create characters I want to hang out with. Those characters have so much dimension that I forget they’re fictional. Stephanie Reid is amazing at writing those kinds of characters.

Reid’s second novel, "Trust in Me", is about Sandra and Nick. Sandra has trust issues, a big heart and a witty sense of humor. Nick has … excuse me while I melt … okay I've solidified once again. Nick is the most incredibly subtle mix of charming, sweet alpha I've read in a very long time. Like Sandra, I felt an immediate attraction. But she has reasons to be leery of Nick. She’s looking out for her younger brother, David, and Nick isn’t the kind of man she wants to see her brother hanging out with.

Even though Sandra has been burned in the past and has admittedly ruined some relationships with her trust issues, I still felt a spark of hope from her. She’s a strong, capable woman, but she’d like someone to share the ups and downs of life with.

This story has such a slow, delicious burn. The pacing is perfect. There are many laugh out loud moments in between the sexy buildup.

After I finished this book, I missed Sandra and Nick. I wanted to hang out with them some more. The story was very complete and fulfilling, but the characters were so well drawn and likable that I wanted to go have a drink with them. Creating characters like that takes something very special, and Stephanie Reid has it. Are you looking for a total package? (Heehee, I said package.) "Trust in Me" is one of those rare books that has it all. I flipped through the pages at record speed and then cursed myself for reading it so fast because then I had no more Sandra and Nick. Get to know these two (by clicking here), and trust me, you’ll feel the same."

Chelle here!  I'm really looking forward to snatching up this book!  Sounds like Brenda gives it an overwhelming

Sara Ney Tells Us Why She Loves a "Stupid Boy"

Author Sara Ney doesn't have time to read a whole lot.  So when she does, you KNOW it's good. Today, she's doing a guest review for us!  Here now....Sara Ney:

Let me start off by saying, “Stupid Girl” blew my mind – in the best. Possible. Way. In fact, if we’re being honest here, I might have even awkwardly fan-girled author Cindy Miles via Facebook (for which I am only slightly embarrassed about) to rave about it.  (You can get it by clicking here.)

So naturally, I have been counting down the days for the follow-up, “Stupid Boy,” to be released, checking my Amazon Wish List almost daily - just on the off chance they would miraculously change the date and release it sooner. Dammit, no such luck (can I say dammit in this review!?).
Well, let me tell you – "Stupid Boy" was worth the wait.

I’m not much of a re-capper when it comes to reviews; but what I will do is tell you how the book made me feel while I was reading it in a few words: Wonder. Sadness. Hope. Awe.

Ms. Miles has a way with describing inner emotions and dialogue that reach in and grab you by the heartstrings and pull; making you hang on every written word with baited breath. You will loudly ‘shush!’ anyone nearby who tries to interrupt you while you’re devouring “Stupid Boy.”

The characters – Harper and Kane -will break/shatter/melt your heart at the same time they’re breaking each other’s. You don’t just feel terrible for them; you feel terrible for yourself for also having to endure their pain! Woe is you!

Flawed. Broken. Determined. But yet… Sexy and romantic. Ever heard of a book boyfriend? You’ll want Kane to date you and devour you with his intense gaze and quick wit, but he’ll refuse; because he’s honorable and loyal to Harper like that.  Sigh.

I wish I hadn’t read Stupid Boy, so I could relive the thrills, kisses, & beautiful tale for the first time, all over again…

That my friends, is a damn. Good. Book.

Chelle here!!  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Sara gives our newest Diamond, Author Cindy Miles, and "Stupid Boy" (that you can get by clicking here) a damn good

"Something Yellow" is Something of Perfection

Very rarely do I finish a book, put it down and think "Wow.  Just....wow."

But my newest Diamond, Laura Templeton, did just that when I read her beautiful book "Something Yellow".  It made me say "wow" and made it incredibly difficult to pick up another book.

"Something Yellow" is set in the Appalachian Mountains.  Not the extreme poverty stricken areas.  But a small community that might be considered lower middle class.

Our heroine, Holly, returns home after spending thirteen years trying to bury the grief of losing her younger sister.  And I mean "losing" in the literal sense.  Gone.  Vanished without a trace. Can you imagine living with the questions for thirteen years?

But Holly has to return home to care for her dying mother.

Templeton paints a beautiful picture of the Appalachian Mountains, as well as the good, and bad that must be endured to live there.  The characters are wonderfully developed and the story adds just enough of an element of mystery to force you to walk in Holly's shoes.  You want to know what happened to her sister as much as she does.  And you experience the frustration of not knowing.

"Something Yellow" is a beautifully written story about dealing with grief, not outrunning your demons and finding your own closure...even if answers never come.

My ONLY critique is that it ended rather abruptly.  There really could have been an additional chapter or two to develop that part of the story.  But overall, that doesn't take away from the fact that "Something Yellow" is one of my top reads so far this year.  And I don't say that lightly.  You can get it by clicking here.

Laura Templeton wrote a book that I would normally give 4.5 diamonds.  But since I don't have that graphic, I'm rounding it up to a solid

Kristin Reviews a Brand New Author!

Kristin here!! I love finding new authors to read. It’s so much fun to watch them grow right before your eyes like they’re your own child. Diamond Teagan Hunter is my newest find and I just love her to pieces! Her debut novel, "Here’s to Tomorrow", is a very cute and sweet read with a female lead that is my soul sister. Here’s the synopsis:

A chance meeting... A slip of the tongue... Two lives forever changed...

Rae Kamden has no idea what she wants to do in life. She thinks leaving her small town is the way to go, but after running into car trouble (and the sexiest man she's ever seen), she begins rethinking everything she thought she wanted out of life.

Hudson Tamell isn't your typical twenty-four year old. The last seven years haven't been a cake walk. But after finally getting his life just where he wants it, he meets Rae and her impossibly unfiltered mouth. She's like no one he's ever met before, totally throwing him off that carefully paved road. But can she handle his life and all the baggage that comes along with it?

Now the girl who doesn't really fit into his world is the one person he wants in it...no matter what demons she has.

As a fellow “open-mouth-insert-foot-er”, I fully related to Rae from the very first line of the book. I fell in love with her spunk and no-BS attitude.  She has a very close relationship with her family and watching the interactions between Rae, her sister and cousin were hilarious!

Then there is Hudson *sigh*. Who wouldn't want to break down in front of an auto shop filled with hot mechanics? I really liked Hudson’s fierce loyalty to his friends and family. While reading this story, I couldn’t help but wish I could be friends with all of them.

You can get Rae, Hudson and the rest of the crew by clicking here.

I cannot wait for more from these characters.  I give this debut novel by Teagan Hunter

It's Time to Say Goodbye to Joe and Molly *sniff*

The curse of reading a series is that by the final book I'm so emotionally invested in the characters, they have become almost like friends to me.  I enjoy their company.  I want to know how their lives are going.  And I honestly grieve because I won't get to see them anymore.

Are my feelings a bit melodramatic?  Of course they are.  But since I'm currently baking child #3.5, I'm allowed to be a little emotional over the loss of some fictional characters!  Especially when the characters are Joe and Molly.

You see, the "Carved Hearts" series by Michelle Pace and L.G. Pace III has been one of my favorites from the beginning.  Since the very first novel, "Good Wood", we've watched Joe and Molly fall in love.  This hasn't been smooth sailing considering both Joe and Molly have some pretty serious demons to overcome.  Add to it, Joe is the best friend of Molly's older brothers and there was always bound to be some trouble.

But through the series, we've seen them both grow and mature into the couple they're supposed to be.

Until "Heartwood".

Yes, we still see them navigate some of the harder parts of their relationship.  But boy, oh boy...does life ever get hard on them for a while!

Now, talking with Michelle Pace, I told her she is gonna get some flack for this book.  Why? Because some of the situations our favorite couple are about to go through don't happen to everyone.  These are not issues everyone will face.

BUT...for those who DO face these issues, the Pace's are BANG ON with how it goes down.  And for that they should be applauded.  Because they flat out nailed it.

By far, this is my favorite book in the series.  It is fun and sweet.  But it is also gripping and tormenting.  It is a fantastic work of literature.  I still don't want the series to end.  But if it has to, THIS is sheer perfection.  See for yourself by clicking here.

So fair well, Molly and Joe.  We'll miss you.  But you go out with a fantastic

ZB Heller Shows Us All Kinds of "Moxie"

Getting a freebie can really be hit or miss.  Most times, I'd say it's a miss.

But I feel like I've hit the freebie lottery these days with how many great books I've found!  One of these was by my newest Diamond, ZB Heller and her hilarious book, "The Chronicles of Moxie". Check out the synopsis as found on Amazon:

"Moxie Summers is a curvy, twenty-six year old teacher who has not had the best track record with relationships.  In a drunken stupor at a bar, she meets Miles who turns out to be her sparing equal, until she vomits all over his shoes.  Just when she thinks things couldn't get worse, her dream man turns out to be the single father of the newest student in her class.

While fighting an attraction for Miles, Moxie's conniving stepmother tries to advise Moxie she needs to get in shape if she's ever going to catch the man of her dreams.  To make matters worse a Girl Scout plans Moxie's demise, a surprise party makes everyone blush, and then there was the skunk...

Can Moxie overcome all the Girl Scout cookies, food poisoning and a showdown at Costco to get to Miles?"

Now, the main plot of "The Chronicles of Moxie" revolves around Moxie's love life and how soon she can get laid.  While it's tamer than a Tara Sivec novel, if that kind of raunchy humor offends you, walk away.  But if you can appreciate a lot of sarcastic wit, you'll enjoy this read.

Funny thing is, the book isn't just funny.  There are also some really sweet moments.  And some sad ones.  But rest assured, your funny bone will get a work out and you will walk away smiling.

If that's the kind of book you need to cure your most recent book hangover, then try it by clicking here.  For just $0.99, you can't go wrong!

ZB Heller had a lot of "Moxie" to write this book.  But it paid off with a very funny

A Signed Paperback Giveaway and a Never-before-seen Prologue?? HAPPY TUESDAY!

Have you read "Change of Hart" by M.E. Carter yet?  It's about a professional football player and self-proclaimed bachelor whose life completely changes when he meets a little boy that he starts to mentor and falls in love with the boy's mother.  It's a perfect read right after the Super Bowl. Although, there aren't any WWE moments in the book, so don't expect that kind of ending.

But what most people don't know is that "Change of Hart"has a never before seen prologue.  It was cut before the book was published because all the feedback said this information was more powerful when it came out later on in the book.

Well, guess what?  We've got it and have permission to show you!

If you have read "Change of Hart", you'll enjoy seeing Addison's perspective on this topic.

If you haven't read it, it won't ruin the book.  But if it's on your TBR, you may want to wait and come back to this later.

So without further ado....the unedited Prologue to "Change of Hart"...

"I have choices, I thought to myself, staring at nothing. That’s what the therapist said.  I have choices.

I sat on the couch in our living room.  Our living room.  The living room we picked out together when we decided it was time to start a family.  It used to make me happy, being in this living room.  Nothing really makes me happy anymore.  I’m not necessarily sad.  More like numb.  Which is why I have choices.

I only have two choices though.  I either stay or I go.  That’s not really having choices.  That’s making a decision.

I could leave.  I could go back to Kansas and live with my parents.  I could get a job at my dad’s office doing whatever office people do.

But I’m not feeling confident enough to start over.  My confidence blew out the window six months ago.  Funny thing about self-confidence. . . you can spend years building it up.  You can surround yourself with encouraging people.  You can have the greatest family alive.  But one credit card statement is all it takes to make you question all that confidence.  One statement that makes you wonder when you became not pretty enough, not smart enough, not good enough.  And it takes a hell of a lot longer than six months to try and get that confidence back.

I was still thinking about my choices when the phone rang, interrupting my internal debate.  I didn’t recognize the number but swiped my finger across the screen to answer anyway.

“Hello?” I answered in a soft voice.

“Hi, this is Officer Chris O’Neill with the Dallas Police Department.  Am I speaking with Mrs. Bryant?”  My heart started pounding.  Why is someone from the DPD calling me?

“This is she,” I said trying not to let him hear the concern in my voice.

“Mrs. Bryant, I’m calling on behalf of your husband, Austin,” he said.  My fear should have spiked at his words.  But they didn’t.  It wasn’t about Jaxon.  And I was already too numb.

“What about him?” I asked.

“Ma’am, there’s been an accident.  We need you to come down to the hospital.”

He rattled off more information about which hospital and who to ask for when I got there.  I thanked him while I grabbed my keys and headed out the door.

I should be running for the car, I thought to myself.  That’s what people do when their spouse is in an accident, right?

But I wasn’t running.  And I wasn’t driving fast.  I wasn’t frantic to get there.  Because I knew she would be there.  And I wasn’t about to deal with her when I was trying to make a decision.  I didn’t want her to taint my choices like she’s tainted my life.

I parked in the parking garage around the corner from the emergency entrance and walked through the sliding glass doors.  I was greeted by a young woman, she couldn’t be more than 23, wearing navy blue scrubs and squeaky sneakers.

“Officer Chris O’Neill called me.  Said my husband had been in an accident.  His name is Austin Bryant,” I told the nurse.  She was really cute.  Long blond hair full of spiral curls, pulled back into a ponytail.  Big blue eyes.  I wondered if she felt as confident as she looked.

“Give me just one minute, ma’am,” she said to me.  “Officer O’Neill is still here.  Let me get him for you.”  She took off through another set of sliding doors.

I turned to see dozens of people milling about the waiting room.  Some were very obviously sick.  Others were comforting small children who were laying on their laps.  An ambulance siren wailed in the distance.  It was all very disconcerting.  But at least she wasn’t here.  The knots in my stomach relaxed at that realization.

“Mrs. Bryant?”

I turned my head and saw a short, stout police officer with a 1970’s mustache walking towards me.

“Mrs. Bryant, I’m Officer O’Neill.  I was one of the officers on the scene of your husband’s
accident.”
I nodded in understanding.  “Is he going to be alright?”

“Can you come with me?” he asked, not answering my question.  He led me to small, private room around the corner and shut the door.  My heart should have been sinking.  Logically, I knew that because nothing good comes from a police officer leading you into a private room at the hospital your husband was just brought to after a major car accident.

“Mrs. Bryant,” he started gently, “your husband was in a very serious accident.  I’m sure you know the roads froze overnight?”  I nodded.

“He apparently hit a patch of black ice, followed by a couple other cars that hit the same patch right after him.”  He paused, waiting for a reaction from me.  But what could I do except listen?

He cleared his throat.  “Your husband’s car started to spin when he hit the ice and ended up facing the wrong way on the highway.  The cars behind him didn’t spin.  Just slid across the ice and hit his car.  They were all going at high rates of speed and he was facing the wrong way, so the impact was very strong.”

“Like a head on collision,” I clarified.

He nodded.  “Yes ma’am.  CPR was administered on the scene, but by the time the ambulance got there, he was already gone.  I’m sorry, Mrs. Bryant, but your husband didn’t make it.”

My husband didn’t make it.

My husband. . . Austin. . . gone.

Just like that, I no longer had choices.  I no longer had a decision to make.  Sure, other decisions were out there.  But the biggest decision of my life was made by fate.  There was a small comfort in knowing that I didn’t have to think about it anymore.  This unhappiness, this tainted situation was over.  I wanted to feel sadness.  I wanted to feel pain.  But I just felt a strange sense of relief.

Then I remembered my reason for living, the love of my life, my Jaxon.  And my heart broke in two.  Jaxon’s father, his hero, his best friend had died and I couldn’t contain the sobs.  How would I explain this to him?

Officer O’Neill gave me a few minutes to pull myself together before leading me down the hall to do paperwork and whatever else you have to do in situations like these.  That’s when I made a decision.  The decision I should have made before.  The decision that Jaxon’s needs come first.  He is six year’s old and he’s my son.

I’d spent too much time wallowing in self-pity.  It was time to be strong for Jax.  His hero may be gone, and we’ll be dealing with the effects of that forever, but I’m not.  And for now, no matter what it takes, no matter what the sacrifice, I will have to be enough for him.  For Jaxon."

Reid and Cosway Make the Most Perfect Pair With Their Perfect Collaboration

I have decided that Penny Reid is a magician.  Or a witch.  Or a wizard.  But surely nobody is this talented.  Seriously, everything she writes turns to gold.  And I should know because I've read everything she's written except for one book.  Relax, I'm just waiting to get to ABF to get the signed paperback to read.

But seriously, how often do the words "biomedical researcher" and "romance novelist" go on the same resume?  I'll tell you how many times.

One.

Her name is Penny Reid.

Then you add Dublin born and bred LH Cosway to bring in a touch of the Irish, and you have the genius writing duo that brings us an extremely fun tale titled "The Hooker and the Hermit".

Rest assured, "The Hooker" is not a prostitute.  Ronan, our hero, plays professional rugby in Ireland and his position is that of a hooker.  He's aggressive.  He's rough around the edges.  And he's all man.

"The Hermit"....well that's not too far off.  Our heroine, Annie, is a socially awkward publicity whiz who feels more comfortable behind a monitor than in a crowd.  She's also kind-hearted and endearing.  Together "The Hooker and the Hermit" make the most perfect, unlikely pair.

You might be wondering how Penny Reid and LH Cosway ended up writing a book together. It's quite an interesting story.  While it Edinburgh together, Ms. Reid was discussing a book idea she had for about a blogger who objectified men "John Madden style", by scrawling all over the pictures.  Fast forward to a dinner during that same trip when a third author mentioned how fun it would be co-author with someone.  Reid and Cosway looked at each other at the same time and BAM!  The lightbulbs went off.  They started plotting the book that night.  And I'm so glad they did!

"The Hooker and the Hermit" is already one of my favorite reads of the year.  It's fun.  It's sexy. It's funny.  And it'll bring tears to your eyes.  As writing partners, Reid and Cosway are a phenomenal duo.  While the characters have their own personalities and thought processes, the flow between chapters is seamless.

You will absolutely adore this book.  I could read it over and over.  So don't hesitate!  Get it by clicking here.

Penny Reid and LH Cosway scored a "try" (that's rugby talk for touchdown) with this book for an easy
